Welcome to my website, my name is Garth Laidlaw and I’m a freelancer animator, illustrator, fine artist, and teacher. To read more about me, see my About Me page.
Upcoming News, Classes, and Projects
JULY 8 - SEPT 30: I'm having my paintings up for sale at Miijidaa Cafe and Bistro in downtown Guelph! I think it's a great fit for my work, as I've been working on many landscape paintings from different areas in Ontario, which is what they like to exhibit. To see some of my recent painting, follow me on Instagram.
ONGOING My Guelph Figure Drawing group continues to meet every Tuesday evening to draw from a figure. If you're local to Guelph, it's never too late to try drawing! It's a drop-in open session, so no instructor and very casual with treats and tea at the break.
My Upcoming Projects
PAINTING I'm working on several new landscape oil paintings for all of my upcoming exhibitions. Here are a couple samples: 1 and 2. Also my fine art page. I'm currently open to commissioned work, so if you’re interested contact me.
CHILDREN'S BOOKS There are two new children's book on the horizon. Both are too early to mention very much about. The first is of my own creation, and I'll be submitting it to publishers in July if I stay on schedule. It is a Canadian-themed folk tale about Maple Syrup! That is all I will say for now, but very excited about it. Here is a snippet of an illustration from it.
BLOG ARTICLES I have several new blog articles with my reflections on art, or parallel topics. It takes me a long time to write posts, because I really want them to be valuable, and not just more internet fodder. This said, I hope to keep a fairly regular schedule.
ANIMATION My primary work for the past few years has been animation, and I have several new ones that you can see on my animation page. I've been exploring new ways of making animation feel more "hand-made" to match the rest of my artwork. Also to oppose the "corporate-looking" motion graphics which are all too common now.
ONTARIO ARTS COUNCIL GRANT A working partner and I have received an Ontario Arts Council grant to produce a 3-4 minute short film on the theme of mental health and suicide, but told through a very metaphorical, imaginative way. I'm really looking forward to this project as I'll get to test out entirely new animation methods in the making of it.
PRINT SHOP I regularly add more art prints to my online print shop, check it out here. I am also taking custom orders to print on canvas, so if you're interested in this, email me.
SPED-UP VIDEOS I've been increasingly recording my oil painting process, and speeding it up, and then posting it on Youtube and Facebook, have a look at my videos to see some of them. If only I could actually work that fast.
Need an Animated Video?
I offer several different kinds of animation. The most basic and budget-friendly is whiteboard animation. These are great for explaining concepts, and can be completed fairly quickly. I’ll need to know if you require a voice-over narrator to speak during the video, and if you would like music at any points in the video. For music, I recommend looking on Premiumbeat.com. I often receive complete scripts from clients, but if you would like help developing your script, I offer this service as well.
The next step up from whiteboard animation is motion graphic animation, often used interchangeably with “motion design”. This encapsulates a wide variety of different kinds of animation. It is often in full colour, with characters, locations, or just text. There are no strict guidelines as to what motion graphics are or aren’t, but generally, they are quite custom-made to your brand, campaign, product, or concept. They can be full colour, limited colour, or black and white. They can have camera moves such as zooming in, panning across an area, and artwork can appear on-screen in a variety of ways. The best way to get an idea is to see it! Take a look at my animation page to see some of my own work, or visit some of my favourite studios work here, and here.
The last form of animation, which is the most costly, but also the most engaging and potential award-winning quality, is simply called full animation. A great example is this Travel Oregon animation by Psyop and Suncreature Studios (which I’ve also written a blog post about here). This allows for an infinite range of character, prop, and location animation. Your imagination is the limit with full animation. This is the way the Disney used to make their films.
